Kicko product setup guide

Before using your new vape product

Most issues with a new vape can be resolved with the correct setup. Use this guide to prepare your product, avoid harsh or burnt draws, and identify when something may genuinely be wrong.

Which product did you purchase?

Refillable and pre-filled products require different setup steps. Begin with the section that matches your product.

🧴 Refillable product

I fill the pod myself

Your device uses bottled e-liquid and a refillable pod, tank or replaceable coil.

  • Charge the device before use
  • Confirm the pod or coil is compatible
  • Remove seals and open the correct filling port
  • Fill the pod without overfilling it
  • Prime the coil for at least 5–10 minutes
  • Begin with gentle, controlled draws
Go to refillable setup
💨 Pre-filled product

My pod is already filled

Your pod contains e-liquid and is designed to connect directly to a compatible device.

  • Check that the pod matches your device
  • Remove all seals, stickers and silicone bungs
  • Charge the device if required
  • Insert the pod firmly and correctly
  • Allow a cold pod to reach room temperature
  • Use a slow, gentle inhale rather than a hard draw

Always check the instructions supplied with your product

Devices can operate differently. The manufacturer’s instructions should take priority where they differ from this general guide.

Filling a refillable vape pod with e-liquid

Setting up a refillable vape

Complete every step before taking your first draw. Using a new coil before it has absorbed enough e-liquid is one of the most common causes of a burnt taste.

1

Inspect the device

Check the device, pod and charging port for visible damage.

2

Charge the battery

Use the recommended charging cable and allow the device to charge before first use.

3

Install the correct pod or coil

Confirm compatibility and make sure the pod or coil is fully and evenly seated.

4

Fill through the correct opening

Open the filling plug and add e-liquid slowly. Do not place e-liquid down the central airflow tube.

5

Do not overfill

Leave a small air space inside the pod and close the filling plug securely.

6

Wait 5–10 minutes

Keep the filled pod upright while the e-liquid completely saturates the cotton.

7

Start gently

Begin with slow, gentle draws. If the device has adjustable power, begin at the lower end of the recommended range.

Important: If a new coil tastes burnt, stop using it. Continuing to vape may permanently damage the cotton inside the coil.

Four rules for refillable products

These simple habits prevent many common performance problems.

⏱️

Prime every new coil

Filling the pod is not enough. Allow at least 5–10 minutes for the cotton to absorb the e-liquid.

🧴

Keep e-liquid above the coil

Do not continue using the pod when the e-liquid level is too low to keep the cotton wet.

🌬️

Do not inhale too hard

Pulling too forcefully can draw excess e-liquid into the airflow, causing gurgling or spitback.

🧻

Keep connections clean

Wipe condensation from the pod base and device contacts using a clean, dry tissue.

Setting up a pre-filled pod or device

Pre-filled products require less preparation, but packaging seals, compatibility and inhaling technique still need to be checked.

1

Check compatibility

Make sure the pod is designed for the exact device model you are using.

2

Remove all packaging

Remove protective stickers, silicone bungs and seals from the mouthpiece, base and airflow openings.

3

Check the pod

Do not use a pod that appears cracked, damaged or significantly empty when first opened.

4

Charge the device

If the device is rechargeable, ensure it has sufficient charge before assuming the pod is not working.

5

Insert the pod firmly

Push the pod into place evenly. It should sit securely without forcing it.

6

Take a slow, gentle draw

Most pod devices respond best to a smooth mouth-to-lung inhale, similar to drawing on a cigarette.

If a pod has been stored somewhere cold, allow it to return to room temperature before use. Cold e-liquid can become thicker and may not flow through the pod as effectively.

Why does it feel harsh on my throat?

A strong or uncomfortable throat hit does not necessarily mean the product is faulty. Check these common causes first.

Nicotine strength

A nicotine strength that is too high for you may feel excessively strong or uncomfortable.

Nicotine type

Freebase nicotine generally produces a more noticeable throat hit than nicotine salts.

Inhaling too hard

A long or forceful draw may produce a stronger sensation than a short, controlled inhale.

Power is too high

If the device is adjustable, excessive power can make the vapour warmer and harsher.

Coil is not saturated

A dry or partially saturated coil can create an unpleasant, scratchy or burnt draw.

Coil needs replacing

A worn coil may produce a burnt taste, weaker flavour or an increasingly harsh sensation.

Troubleshooting common problems

Select the issue you are experiencing to see the most likely causes and the checks you can perform.

The vape tastes burnt

A burnt taste usually means the cotton inside the coil is dry, damaged or worn.

  1. Stop using the product immediately.
  2. Check that the pod contains sufficient e-liquid.
  3. Make sure a new pod or coil was primed for 5–10 minutes.
  4. Reduce the power if the device has adjustable settings.
  5. Allow time between draws so the cotton can resaturate.
  6. Replace the pod or coil if the burnt taste remains.

Once the cotton has been badly burnt, adding more e-liquid will not normally restore it.

The throat hit is too strong or harsh
  • Take shorter and gentler draws.
  • Check whether the nicotine strength is suitable for you.
  • Confirm that the pod or coil has been properly primed.
  • Reduce adjustable power or airflow intensity.
  • Replace the coil if the taste is also burnt or unpleasant.

Stop using the product and seek professional advice if you feel unwell or experience persistent irritation.

There is no vapour
  1. Check that all protective seals have been removed.
  2. Charge the device.
  3. Confirm the device is switched on, if applicable.
  4. Remove and firmly reinstall the pod.
  5. Clean the pod and device connection points.
  6. Check whether the indicator light responds when activated.
  7. Try another compatible pod if one is available.
The vapour or flavour is weak
  • Charge the device fully.
  • Check the pod’s e-liquid level.
  • Make sure the airflow is not blocked.
  • Clean condensation from the mouthpiece and pod base.
  • Replace an old pod or coil.

Vapour production can differ between devices, coil resistances and e-liquid formulations.

The pod is leaking

A small amount of condensation around the pod is normal and is not necessarily a leak.

  • Check that the filling plug is completely closed.
  • Make sure the pod has not been overfilled.
  • Keep the device upright where practical.
  • Avoid leaving the product in a hot car or direct sunlight.
  • Do not inhale too forcefully.
  • Inspect the pod for cracks or physical damage.
  • Wipe the pod and device contacts with a dry tissue.
The device is gurgling

Gurgling generally means excess e-liquid or condensation has entered the airflow passage.

  • Remove the pod and wipe its base.
  • Clean the mouthpiece with a dry tissue.
  • Keep the pod upright.
  • Use a slower, gentler inhale.
  • Check that the pod is not overfilled.
Small droplets are reaching my mouth

This is commonly called spitback and may happen when excess e-liquid collects around the coil or airflow.

  • Stop using the product and wipe the mouthpiece.
  • Remove condensation from the pod base.
  • Do not overfill refillable pods.
  • Avoid hard or sudden inhalations.
  • Replace the pod or coil if the problem continues.
The device light is flashing

Flashing lights may indicate a low battery, poor pod connection, short circuit, overheating or activation timeout.

  1. Stop using the device.
  2. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the light pattern.
  3. Charge the battery if the pattern indicates low charge.
  4. Remove and reinstall the pod.
  5. Clean and dry the connection points.

Do not continue using the device if the warning persists, particularly if it becomes unusually hot.

The device is becoming hot

Slight warmth during use or charging can occur, but excessive heat is not normal.

  • Stop using and disconnect the device from charging.
  • Place it somewhere safe and allow it to cool.
  • Do not charge it under bedding or in direct sunlight.
  • Do not use a visibly damaged battery or charging port.
  • Contact Kicko if excessive heating continues.
The battery is running out quickly
  • Confirm the device has completed a full charge.
  • Longer draws and higher power settings use more battery.
  • Lower-resistance coils generally require more power.
  • Check that the device is not activating in a pocket or bag.
  • Use the recommended charging cable and power source.
The pod does not fit the device

Do not force the pod. Check the product name, model and pod compatibility shown on the packaging and product page.

Products that look similar may use different connections. Contact Kicko before opening additional pods if you believe the incorrect product was purchased.

When should I replace the pod or coil?

Pods and coils are consumable components. Their lifespan varies depending on use, power, e-liquid and inhaling habits.

REPLACEMENT SIGN

Burnt or unpleasant taste

A persistent burnt taste usually means the cotton has been damaged or the coil has reached the end of its usable life.

REPLACEMENT SIGN

Weak flavour or vapour

A noticeable decline in performance after charging and cleaning can indicate a worn pod or coil.

REPLACEMENT SIGN

Persistent leaking or gurgling

If cleaning, correct filling and gentler inhaling do not resolve the issue, the pod or coil may need replacing.
